Radio Frequency Skin Tightening

Radio frequency skin tightening is a nonsurgical method for body contouring and skin tightening that uses heat to rejuvenate your skin. Using their Evolve machine, a trained staff member will safely target deep layers in your skin to naturally increase collagen production.

RF therapy has been used since 2001 to fight against sagging skin and signs of aging. Treatments typically last about an hour.

Radio Frequency Body Contouring and EMS is used for:

  • Fat Destruction

  • Skin Tightening

  • Muscle Toning

How Does Radio Frequency Skin Tightening Work?

To understand how radio frequency tones your body, you first need to know how your skin works. Your skin is made of three main layers: the epidermis on top, the dermis in the middle, and subcutaneous fat on the bottom.

The epidermis is your body’s first line of defense from the environment and is the thinnest layer. It also contains the pigment melanin, which is in charge of your skin color.

The dermis makes up for 90% of your skin’s thickness and contains blood and lymph vessels, nerve endings, collagen, and sweat and oil glands within its two layers. The papillary layer, which regulates your skin’s temperature, and the reticular layer, which strengthens the skin and provides it with elasticity through the use of collagen.

The third layer is the subcutaneous fat layer, which consists of a network of fat and collagen cells that acts as your body’s insulator to conserve heat. It also helps protect your organs and stores fat for energy production.

Radio frequency body contouring targets the subcutaneous fat layer (the adipose tissue/body fat in it) and the dermis.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein made by skin cells called fibroblasts that holds the dermis together. It is responsible for keeping your skin firm. It also helps provide structure to your bones, tendons, cartilage, connective tissues, and teeth.

Unfortunately, collagen production naturally starts to slow down in your mid-20s, at a rate of 1-2% loss, every year. Without adequate collagen, wrinkles, sagging skin, and fine lines can start to form or develop more quickly.

Heating Up Collagen Helps Tighten Skin

Radio frequency skin tightening stimulates the production of collagen in the dermis layer using energy waves to produce heat.

The ideal temperature for collagen stimulation is between 106°F and 110°F (41–43°C). Numerous studies have found that applying this level of heat to the dermis for over 3 minutes causes your body to release heat-shock proteins. These proteins actively stimulate your skin’s collagen production, thus leading to firmer looking skin.

The procedure normally takes about an hour to complete and results are typically noticeable immediately, but final results come up to a few months, after your final treatment. Results vary depending on genetics, lifestyle, and type of radio frequency administered.

For the best results, we recommend always applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and a physical barrier — such as a hat that shades the area being treated — when you’re in direct sun. UV exposure is one of the most damaging elements for collagen, so protecting your skin will ensure the results are long lasting.

Side Effects of Radio Frequency Skin Tightening

Radio frequency skin tightening is safe, effective, and there is literally zero pain associated with treatment. The procedure is noninvasive and recovery is quick and easy.

Meridiem Aesthetics uses Evolve, which is approved by the FDA. Evolve ensures that targeted tissues reach the optimal temperature to induce new collagen production, and fat destruction (lipolysis).

Some patients do experience mild side effects after treatment that usually go away within a couple of days. These side effects include:

●     Slight bruising

●     Redness

●     On rare occasion, scratch-like skin irritations may appear, which will go away in a couple of weeks
